â¢âWelcome,â he said, shoving my hair hard, âto the butt room.â
â¢Christian Grey mashed on my area with the meat of his hand. âDo you like that, you woman?â
â¢âDo I afraid you?â Christian Grey asked, licking his eyebrow.
It was badâreally, really bad. But imposter syndrome didnât stop olâ E.L. James from writing it, and now sheâs probably lounging on her yacht and doing whatever else obscenely wealthy people do like applying La Mer eye cream and avoiding paying her fair share of taxes.
If E.L. James can do it, why not me? So, finally, I decided to confront my dream, no matter how much the thought of it intimidated me. I broke it down and turned it into a goal by researching exactly what steps I needed to take. Then, I took those small steps toward my ultimate goal of writing a book and getting it published.
From the outside, it looks like a was a simple, straightforward path from book idea to publication. The path looked more like a maze full of dead-ends and rejections before I finally found my way out. Iâd laugh and dismiss the people who called me crazy, and then when I was alone with my laptop, Iâd think, Oh shit, I am crazy.
Every day, I step on Legos on the way to my laptop to write. I answer questions about why we have belly buttons and hear the chorus of âMommmmmmmmmmmmyâ from my two kids all day because you know who doesnât care about deadlines? Kids. Theyâre here to keep you humble and ask for snacks.
But right now you are reading my dream realized. It felt daunting in the beginning, and honestly, most of the time it still does as I occasionally allow myself to be overwhelmed with the feeling of being so close to achieving a lifelong dream. The odds were against me, but it wasnât impossible. I knew there was a chance I could be successful, and I just wanted to shoot my shot, be able to tell myself I really tried to achieve this dream and not just leave it to haunt me. I pushed through failures and setbacks and damnit, I did it!
Whatever you want to do, whatever dream you want to achieve, thereâs someone out there who is so much worse than you, but did it. Do you have a dream of being an attorney? Let me remind you that Kellyanne Conway, Michael Cohen, and Rudy Giuliani all got through law school, passed the bar, and, at this writing, only one of them is in federal prison. Want to run for political office? There are men in office right now half as intelligent as you who have probably been in Congress longer than youâve been alive. Do you want to be president of the United States? Recent history has proven anyone can be president and perhaps we even took that a bit too far, but hey! Now the bar is so low, you best be careful not to trip on it. You are capable and worthy of accomplishing your dreams just as much as anyone else.
